Raindrop Inlay

Raindrop Inlay Treatments for Presbyopia

One of the most common problems adults experience between the ages of 41 and 60 is trouble seeing objects up close. This change in vision is known as presbyopia, a condition that gets progressively worse with age. Over time, the once-flexible lens of the eye begins to thicken and lose its flexibility. Eventually, the lens becomes so thick and rigid that it is impossible to focus on objects up close.

What is Age Related Loss of Near Vision?

Age related loss of near vision, or presbyopia, happens when your natural lens loses elasticity, making it difficult to change your focus to see objects up close. Everyone — yes, everyone — will eventually experience presbyopia, making it difficult to perform daily activities, such as reading or looking at a cell phone without glasses.

The Raindrop Solution

Raindrop is a safe way to improve your near vision. The tiny inlay, about the size of a pinhead, can be placed just beneath the surface of your eye in a 10-minute procedure.

The Raindrop Near Vision Inlay has received approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration(FDA) in June of 2016, and has been available around the world for several years prior to approval in the US.

Who is the Raindrop for?
Anybody who needs reading glasses for daily tasks such as using mobile phones, reading a menu, fine print or doing close-up work may be a candidate.

How does it work?
It gently changes the shape of the cornea, the clear front portion of the eye. making everything that is close up easier to see.

How long does it last?
Raindrop is intended to be a long-term solution, but if for any reason you need it removed it can be easily done. Most patients return to their vision before the procedure.

Is it safe for the eye?
Extensive trials and usage show that it is safe. This was confirmed by the US FDA. Raindrop is bioengineered to facilitate the transport of nutrients and fluid to the eye.

The Raindrop Procedure

During a 10-minute outpatient procedure, Raindrop is placed just beneath the surface of the eye to change the shape and improve near vision.

Raindrop is :

  • Transparent, so no one will realize there is a Raindrop in your eye
  • Well suited for dim light situations as 99.7% of the light passes through the Raindrop and reaches the back of the eye where the image is processed
  • Approximately 80% water, Raindrop resembles a tiny water droplet
  • Bioengineered to facilitate the transport of nutrients and fluid to the eye

MKT_250_Rev_1_Press_Release_InfoGraph_LR-2Most patients return to normal activity after the Raindrop Procedure. Most patients who have had Raindrop gain 5 lines of near vision on an eye chart without the need for reading glasses within one week and their vision continues to improve for several weeks. Patients need to use eye drops for several months for comfort and healing.
